With temperatures plummeting close to zero, or so it felt, the lads played their first ever 9-aside game against our good friends Gloucester. Overall it was a very positive evening with the lads slipping into the 9-aside format of the game with ease and producing some moments of magic. However, as expected, there was also one or two moments when we lost our shape a little and looked new to the larger format of the game. This was to be expected, yet overall we walked away from Heartlands incredibly positive.

At the back, Aidan was a constant reassuring presence, using the pace of Fareed and strength of James to form a commanding trio. At the other end of the field, Romaoe was teaming up superbly with Reece and creating chances for The Ton,

It was thanks to this duo that we took the lead. Picking the ball up in midfield, Reece skipped past his marker and played Romaoe in on goal. The pace of the St. Matthew’s striker helped him race clear of the Gloucester defender before he coolly slotted the ball past the onrushing keeper.

With minutes left on the clock, The Ton switched off momentarily and allowed Gloucester to equalise, although in reality it was a fair result and just what the talented Gloucester boys deserved.

On a cold night, in difficult conditions and playing 9-aside for the first time, the boys served us up food for thought and ushered in the half-term in exciting fashion.

Up The Ton!
