Black Team Make Positive Start to the Season

Saturday 15th September 2018 @ Vale Stadium, Castle Vale

Erdington and Saltley Black 12 – 0 Sutton Coldfield u10s

Team: Cody, Rhys, Ethan, Jeval, Kian S, Toby, Markie, Romaeo, Callam, Cian L and Joshua

Goals: Toby x 3, Markie x 3, Callam x 2, Cian L x 2, Kian S x 1 and Joshua x 1

Man of the Match: Cian L – He might have only played half a match, but what an amazing half it was!

Following on from last week’s victory in the Mark Cross Trophy, the boys in black continued to make positive moves at the opening of their season. Against a very young Sutton side, The Ton boys played some excellent passing football and worked as a team, something that hasn’t always been prevalent in their play.

By the end of the opening third, the boys had built a healthy 3-0 lead thanks in no short part to the outstanding forward play of Cian L. As the lone front man, he worked tirelessly to bring others into the action and scored a brace of his own with a pair of smart finishes.

The middle third contained less goals, with The Ton boys adding a fourth goal to the trio bagged in the opening period. With the ball bouncing around in the Sutton box, Joshua arched his body enough to strike the ball cleanly on the half volley. It was a superb finish and the least he deserved after entering the action at the start of the second twenty minutes.

Despite giving it 100% and refusing to give up, Sutton found the last third a step too far, although there is no shame in that. Their performance gave notice to the rest of the districts that Sutton will have a cracking team in both 2019 and 2020!

A flurry of goals in the final period of the game saw The Ton stretch their lead and score a number of excellent finishes.

If the boys continue to work as a team and build on the promising start that they’ve made to 2018/19, they could achieve some significant feats this year.

Well done boys!

Girls Start 2018/19 With Fine Performance

Wednesday 12th September 2018 @ St. Matthew’s Primary School, Nechells

Erdington and Saltley vs. South Birmingham

Gold Team 8 – 0 South Birmingham

Black Team 2 – 2 South Birmingham

Gold Team: Monia, Skye, Millie, Shay Leigh, Rosie, Savannah, Rihanna, Lacy and La’tia

Black Team: Monia, Millie W, Megan, Ashante, Jessica, Kaira, Kayla, Keeley, Keira, Maddy and Tiana

Goals: La’tia x 5, Lacy x 3, Millie x 2, Savannah x 1, Shay Leigh x 1 Jessica x 1

After a few months without a game, the girls started their attempt to surpass the historic achievements of 2017/18 with an excellent performance and victory against good friends South Birmingham.

With two Ton teams taking to the field, there was talent everywhere you looked tonight.

The Gold team showed the benefits of playing together during the 2017/18 season, playing some fluid passing football and scoring a few cracking goals!

The Black team took a few moments to get into their groove, before playing some excellent football in their second game against South Birmingham.

With the goals spread across the midfield, it was left to old timer Millie to score a brace of goals, her first ever goals in the gold and black of Erdington and Saltley during her 18 months in the team. Well done Millie!

The first tournament of the season kicks off on Saturday 22nd September and we can’t wait to see the girls in action!

Well done girls!

Ton Boys Start the Season in Style!

Saturday 8th September 2018 @ Vale Stadium, Castle Vale

Birmingham Primary Schools’ FA 6-a-side Championship

Black Team: Cody, Kian S, Rhys, Daniel, Markie, Callam and Joshua

Goals: Joshua x 2, Markie x 8, Daniel x 7, Callam x 5

Gold Team: Danny, Sean, Ethan, Kyran, Kayden and Daniel

Goals: Kayden x 2, Daniel x 2, Sean x 3 and Kyran x 2

The Ton boys lifted the first piece of silverware of 2018/19 in dramatic style on Saturday, as a goal with the last kick (or head) of the game was enough to wrestle the title from South Birmingham. Saturday also demonstrated the great spirit amongst both Ton teams, as well as the talent coming through the largely under 10s Gold team.

After struggling in the opening half of the tournament, the Gold team dug deep and grew as the morning progressed before bagging a number of impressive victories in the latter stages of the competition. One such victory – against Aston – proved to be the pivotal result of the day as it knocked the boys in claret and blue off the top of the league and opened the way for the Black team to make aim for the title.

Going into their final game, the boys in black lay second in the table, three points behind leaders South Birmingham. Knowing a win would guarantee them the crown, the lads peppered the South goal from the opening whistle, only to find the South shot stopper in imperious form. Then, with less than 10 seconds remaining on the clock, Rhys crossed from deep and stood in amazement as his pinpoint ball was headed past the South keeper. As the jubilation of winning engulfed all players, a massive celebration spilled onto the pitch as goalscorer Callam was mobbed by his excited teammates.

The victory in this tournament was our first since 2016 and our fourth since 2012.

What a way to open the season!

Well done boys! You did us all proud! Both teams were incredible!

Up The Ton!

BPSFA Summer Festival

As part of the trial process, The Ton entered two sides into the BPSFA Summer festival, kindly hosted by Birmingham City FC.

The black team finished second in their group and qualified for an all-Erdington and Saltley semi-final. In their three group games they beat East Birmingham, lost to Sutton Coldfield and drew with South Birmingham.

On the other side of the draw, the gold team finished their group campaign with three wins from their three games. Tavani and Callam scored the goals in a 2-0 victory over East Birmingham, with the latter ascoring his second of the day to add to Markie’s as the Gold team downed Newbury 2-0. In their final game of the day they beat South Birmingham 1-0 courtesy of a Daniel goal.

The semi-final was an understandably tight affair, with neither Ton side wanting to concede ground and honour. The game was settled by a penalty shootout, with the Gold team making the final against Sutton Coldfield. It proved one game too many for the boys as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat.

Goals: Callam x 2, Markie and Daniel

Team: Cody, Ethan, Toby, Jack, Tavani, Romaoe, Cian S, Cian L, Daniel, Markie, Jeval, Callam and Rhys

Wednesday 18th July 2018 @ Hobmoor Academy

Erdington and Saltley Gold 1 – 3 South Birmingham Blues

The scoreline does not do the effort of the lads justice. A sloppy ten minute spell during the opening third saw the lads slip three goals behind. After the opening twenty, the boys regrouped and controlled the game for a number of periods. They were eventually rewarded with a Kyran goal, although they could turn the tie around despite their best efforts.

Goal: Kyran

Team: Danny, Cole, Daniel, Declan, Hughey, Jahkadi, Kayden, Kian C, Keon, Lennon, Kyran, Oscar, Riley, Sean

Wednesday 25th July 2018 @ Alvechurch FC

Erdington and Saltley Gold 0 – 3 Alvechurch u11s

Erdington and Saltley Gold 0 – 0 Queens Park u11s (Trinidad and Tobago)

Erdington and Saltley Black 4 – 2 Alvechurch u12s

Erdington and Saltley Black 0 – 3 Queens Park u12s (Trinidad and Tobago)

It was an evening of mixed fortunes for The Ton, as both teams played opponents who were a year older. With two 30 minute games each, there were many moment of excellent play, as well as several mistakes that will need to be eradicated before the real action starts in September.

While the Black team burst out of the blocks in their opening game, the Gold team found things a little tougher. Goals from Callam, Markie and a brace from Cian L were enough to give the Black team an opening victory.

The Gold team bounced back against Queens Park and could have stole the win on another evening with Daniel going close. However, over on the adjacent pitch, the Black team found their second game a much difficult affair and were unable to replicate the form they showed in their opening game.

Goals: Cian L x 2, Callam and Markie

Gold Team: Cody, Cole, Daniel, Declan, Jahkadi, Kayden, Kyran, Oscar, Riley, Sean, Rhys and Joshua

Black Team: Ethan, Cian L, Daniel, Markie and Callam

Monday 30th July 2018 @ AVFC Bodymoor Heath

Erdington and Saltley Gold 5 – 6 Aston

In an end to end encounter, the Gold team experienced a  wide range of emotions on a night of huge highs and crushing lows, including conceding a last minute goal goal to give Aston the Win.

With Riley bagging four goals and Cody scoring from a goal kick, the boys showed lots of promise against their older opponents. Keon and Lennon caused problems throughout, while Joshua and Kayden added additional creative spark. At the back, Cody, Sean, Ethan and debutante Wiktor proved a strong unit, with the majority of goals conceded once a raft of changes were made.

Overall it was an excellent preseason encounter and one that told us much about the side ahead of the new season.

Goals: Riley x 4 and Cody

Team: Cody, Daniel, Declan, Jahkadi, Kayden, Kian M, Keon, Lennon, Kyran, Oscar, Riley and Sean

Monday 6th August 2018 @ AVFC Bodymoor Heath

Erdington and Saltley Gold 1 – 1 South Birmingham Blue

Erdington and Saltley Gold 3 – 0 Erdington and Saltley C

Erdington and Saltley C 0 – 0 South Birmingham Blue

Three weeks on from their first ever game and a 3-1 loss to South Birmingham Blue, the gold team showed the progress they’ve made in such a short time as they drew 1-1 with the very same opponents. After leading for the majority of the game and scoring a great team goal via Cian, the boys conceded late on, although it wasn’t enough to take the shine off a great evening for the lads.

The other Erdington team also drew against South Birmingham Blue, showcasing the strength in depth in the squad, before finding the gold team a step too far.

Overall it was an excellent evening and great to see how far the boys have come over the course of preseason.

Goals: Cian M, Riley, Kyran and Joshua

Gold team: Cody, Sean, Hugey, Wiktor, Ethan, Lennon, Cian, Joshua, Kyran, Kayden and Riley

C team: Charlie, Harry, Remel, Declan, Jahkadi, Theo, Daniel, Kai and Dylan

Thursday 16th August 2018 @ Jaffray Road

Erdington and Saltley Black 5 – 0 Phoenix United u12s

In their first game for a number of weeks, the Black team stepped up to the challenge of tackling a talented Phoenix side who were a year older than all of our players, and two years older than some of the lads.

The game afforded us the chance to try out new formations and play lads in 2 or 3 different positions ahead of the start of the district season on Saturday 8th September.

The goals were shared round, with five separate players getting on the score sheet on an evening when the boys played some really good football.

Going forward, there is plenty to work on, with our inability to release the ball at the right time an area to improve. However this victory was littered with positives and offered so much to be excited about!

Goals: Markie, Alfie, Cian L, Tavani and Joshua

Team: Padraig, Mason, Toby, Daniel, Markie, Tavani, Joshua, Cian L, Alfie and Jeval

Friday 31st August 2018 @ Jaffray Road

Erdington and Saltley Black W – L Phoenix United u11s

The black team concluded their preseason preparations in style, beating a spirited and talented Phoenix side in comprehensive style. With goals spread around the team, there was nothing Phoenix could do to stop the lads in their tracks despite their best efforts.

A special mention to Kian Bushell who made his debut for the year 6 side despite only being in year four.

Well done boys!

Goals: Toby x 7, Alfie x 4, Markie x 3, Daniel x 2

Team: Padraig, Toby, Daniel, Markie, Tavani, Sean, Hughey, Alfie, Kian B, Rhys and Callam

Squad Announcement: 2018/19 Boys’ Squads

Sunday 1st July 2018

Following six weeks of incredibly tough trials, we are pleased to announce the names of the boys who will make up the Erdington and Saltley Gold and Erdington and Saltley Black squads.

First of all though, we must congratulate all of the boys who took part in the 2018/19 trials. The attitude and effort of the boys has been amazing and we couldn’t have asked for more. The standard of this year’s trials was as good as any year and this made for some very tough decisions.

If your son has not been named in either of the squads, please tell them that this should not diminish their achievements to date. To be nominated by their school as one of the best footballers is a wonderful achievement. To make it to the final 30 boys is a testament to the talent and skills of all the boys.

To the boys who did not make it into the squad – we wish you the very best ahead of the new season and hope to see you achieving wonderful things for your school’s football team.

Girls’ Squad 2018/19

Thank you to all of the girls and their parents who attended  the 2018/19 team trials. This year was our strongest trial in terms of numbers and also in terms of the number of girls who play for a team outside of school. Girls’ football is certainly on the rise in Erdington and Saltley and we should be proud of the talent in our 48 primary schools!

Girls, you were a delight to work with from start to finish. Your attitude was exemplary. From start to finish you tried your best and gave it everything that you had. For that reason, you should be incredibly proud of your efforts.

I will be writing to your head teachers to tell them how you represented your schools with distinction.

Unfortunately it is not possible for all of the girls to make it through to the A and B squads, but we thank everyone for taking part.

As mentioned at the trial, there are a number of local sides keen to recruit new girls to their ranks.

If your daughter does not play for a team, please bring them along to one of the following sides as soon as possible, as they have a talent!

Girls Win ESFA National Plate!

Saturday 9th June 2018 @ Liverpool FC Training Ground

ESFA National Final

Team: Madison, Millie, Sami, Javeigh, Lacy, Liberty, Savannah, Rihanna, Keeley, Tiana, Kayla, Amne, Octavia and Latia

Goals: Liberty and Latia x 2

Group Stage:

Erdington and Saltley 0-2 Sunderland

Erdington and Saltley 1-2 Poole and East Dorset

Erdington and Saltley 0-3 Haringey

Plate Competition

Semi-final: Erdington and Saltley 1 – 0 Bolsover

Final: Erdington and Saltley 1-0 Poole and East Dorset

A day of fluctuating emotions. A day of incredible lows and great highs. A day of history. Another day of history.

All year this set of incredibly talented young ladies have mad history. They have won titles at a Birmingham level and also at a West Midlands level and on the Midlands stage. They have excelled at everything they’ve done and risen to every occasion.

This all seemed to be in jeopardy during the opening group stage of the national finals. The girls, who were the first BPSFA girls’ side to reach the national finals, seemed to have forgotten everything that they had been doing all season.

Three defeats from their opening three games sounds worse than it was, as the girls were in all three games until late on and only lost due to uncharacteristic errors. However the margins at this level are fine and they found themselves out of the reckoning for the cup at the half-way stage of the competition.

Even though emotions were running high, the girls composed themselves and picked themselves up in time for a tilt at the plate competition.

Grit, hard-work and determination characterised their semi-final against Bolsover, who are from near Chesterfield. Everything that was missing in the opening games was suddenly back in abundance. Then up stepped La’tia with a moment of magic and a stunning goal to take the girls into the final!

Next up were Poole and East Dorset, who defeated us during the opening round in dramatic fashion. Having taken the lead, we conceded two goals in the closing minutes of the game to lose 2-1. Yet this time round, the girls were a completely different animal!

An amazing one-two between Liberty and Tiana resulted in the former tucking a deft shot away early in the game. Some resolute defending and a huge amount of team spirit saw the girls over the line and ensured they departed the north west with the national plate trophy!

Wow! Simply amazing! What a team!

Furthermore, as the girls did the business on the pitch, a special mention to our army of fans who lifted the roof and took over Liverpool for the day! What support!

Well done girls!

Up The Ton!

Boys lose great game by single goal

Saturday 2nd June 2018 @ New Ormington Academy, Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton 1-0 Erdington and Saltley

Team: Tyrese, Padraig, Aidan, Louie, Mason, Daniel, Toby, Reece, Klechai, Callam, Ethan and Tavani

Man of the Match: Mason – 60 minutes of outstanding effort in a great battle against the Wolverhampton right winger.

In a pulsating, end to end encounter, The Ton couldn’t find a way past the Wolverhampton ‘keeper before losing to a single goal.

On an excellent surface, both sets of players gave everything they had to ensure the last game of the season went with a bang! It was a superb advert for schools’ football, played in a great spirit by two sets of lads determined to attack at every opportunity.

The opening third was shaded by The Ton, with Toby, Reece and Daniel going close, only to find the Wolverhampton ‘keeper in imperious form, just as he was for the whole game.

With the game evenly balanced, Wolverhampton turned the tide during the middle third and won more of the 50/50 battles before taking the lead through the impressive Zain. Yet despite dipping slightly during the second twenty minutes, the boys still had several tantalising opportunities. First of all, the quick thinking Toby spotted the Wolves goalkeeper off his line following a save and shot first time from distance, only to watch as his thunderous strike flew wide. Then both Reece and Tavani were left frustrated by the Wolves shot-stopper, the former of whom produced a sublime piece of skill to play his teammate in via a audacious scoop pass.

Despite their best efforts, the boys found themselves trailing going into the final third of the game. Yet once again they created opportunities, with Toby, Aidan and Klechai all going close to levelling the match.

With the Wolves keeper having a game to remember, the boys ended the game with nothing to show for their efforts, despite giving it everything that they had. Defeat is normally hard to take, but yesterday morning was far from so. With every single player close to top form, the boys left Wolverhampton with no points, but a countless amount of pride.

Both sets of players brought the curtain down on the season in enjoyable style.

Well done boys!

Up The Ton!
