Jersey 2016: Bag Pack

Polite. Mature. Charming. Three adjectives that perfectly summed up our great kids yesterday afternoon as they worked their socks off to raise close to £350.

One checkout assistant commented,  “They’re just so sweet. They’ve done you proud today.”

Whilst another customer said she thought they were “an inspirstion” due to their efforts.

Tonn and I were left full of pride at the culmination of a very long day. Well done boys!

Is anyone safe in Brum once  these boys turn on the charm?

A Game of Three Halves

Saturday 27th February 2017

Erdington and Saltley 7 – 2 Solihull

image

Team: Rob, Kye, Sam, Tion, Diago, Kane, Ilani, Rio, Cameron and Troy

Goals: Troy x 4, Kane x 1, Ilani x 1 and OG

Men of the Match: Troy for his four goals and Cameron for his incessant work rate throughout the game.

After 20 minutes we found ourselves two goals down. Void of energy and lacking imagination. We had no answer to Solihull, who had worked their socks off during the first third. So much so that every time we had the ball, we found ourselves quickly closed down by a blue shirt. Solihull beat Sutton Coldfield 4-0 in their last game and the early signs suggested they were going to do something similar to us. However as we know only too well, football games can change very quickly (the final of the 2014/15 Birmingham Primary Schools’ FA Cup anyone?).

The team talk after the first twenty was simple: wake up, stop being lazy, fight and win your individual battles.

Boom! And with that boys took control of the game. Three minutes into the second twenty we were equal, following an unfortunate own goal and a penalty which was cooly converted by Troy. Next up was Troy once again, this time cutting in from the left, the Marsh Hill winger switched the ball to his right foot, found himself an opening and rifled home from distance. Not to be undone, Ilani, playing his first game since signing for the Villa, scored a Worldy of his own. Following some neat interplay on the edge of the box, the Yenton baller picked up the ball and smashed in a screamer with his supposedly weaker right foot.

Now in control of the game, the boys continued to attack, only to concede a penalty. However, soon after making a great one-on-one save, Rob was confident as he bounced on his goal line. Diving to his left, the Gunter shot-stopper made a fabulous save before the defence ensured the rebound was cleared up.

Within one minute of that save, Rio burst down the right, linked up with Cameron, before the Gunter midfielder crossed expertly for Troy to bag his hat-trick at the far post. What a twenty minutes!

Although the final third wasn’t as dramatic, it did bring further goals, as Troy scored his fourth, this time from close range. However it was left to Kane to seal a fantastic victory; it was the very least that he deserved after dictating the game from the centre of the park. Controlling the ball after pulling it out of the sky, our captain and top scorer steadied himself and unleashed a thunderous shot which crashed in off the underside of the crossbar.

***UPDATE***

After rightly being contacted by the head (and his deputy) of the Defenders Union, it’s definitely worth noting the part that the defence played in today’s game.

Dropping into the back three from centre midfield, Tion controlled the left hand side of the pitch, as well as using his passing range to start a number of attacks. In the middle, Sam dominated the sky of Nechells, winning header after header. To Sam’s right was the Erdington-Cafu (Kye) who continued the almost telepathic understanding that he has built up with right wing partner Rio. Last but by no means least, there was Diago to the left of the back three. The Featherstone blocker has been in sublime form since the turn of the year and added to that run of form when he entered the game at the start of the final third.

Sometimes it’s easy to overlook the little things, as the goals often claim the headlines. However you couldn’t build a house on a foundation of sand and without a solid defence (I’m including the keeper in that), the team wouldn’t be able to attack in that way that it does.

Whilst looking for a quote to sum up the importance of defending I found this:

“If we score, we might win. However if they don’t score, we will never lose.”

I couldn’t have put it better myself!

Victory – signed, sealed and delivered.

Despite the one-sided nature of the scoreline, Solihull should be commended for their effort. After dominating the opening third, our opponents from the south of the city created a number of chances of their own, only to be thwarted by Rob who was having his best game of the season, visibly spurred on by his great penalty save. Well done Solihull and good luck for the rest of the season.

Roll on next week.

Under 10s Turn on the Style in Local Derby

Wednesday 24th February @ Kingsbury Secondary School

Erdington and Saltley Under 10s 10 – 0 Holly Lane

IMG_20151024_133257 (1)

Team: Gerard, Taylor, Danny, Bobby, Tiarno, Kian, William, Blessing, Cameron and Che

Goals: William x 3, Cameron x 2, Blessing x 2, Danny x 1, Kian x 1 and Che x 1

Man of the Match: William aka The Conductor

On a cold (very cold) evening in Erdington, the future of The Ton turned on the style and produced a performance full of skill, excitement and hard work. With the four Villa boys rested, it was a perfect opportunity for the rest of the squad to stake their claim for a starting place between now and the end of the season.

In Ilani’s absence, William took over central midfield duties and boy did he do it with style! Against his former club, the Abbey baller pulled the strings from the first whistle to the last. Not afraid to run at Holly Lane with the ball, the Phoenix midfielder also played balls with the precision of Iniesta. Constantly causing havoc in our opponent’s box, he rightly earned himself the man of the match award, to go with the hat trick that he had already bagged.

In only his second game for The Ton, under 9s player Bobby made a real statement and produced an assured performance that belied his tender years. From right-back the Brownmed youngster was as cool as a cucumber every time that he had the ball at his feet. Furthermore he was not shy when competing against bigger, older players and sent out a message to the rest of the squad.

Up front Cameron and Blessing linked up well throughout, with each of the strikers bagging a brace of their own. Further goals came from the right foot of Danny, the incredibly talented Kian and Che, who caused chaos down the right during the second half.

Overall it was a superb performance, built on a solid defensive foundation. Tiarno dropped back into defence to make the left-back position his own, whilst Gerard earned a great clean-sheet, but it was Taylor at the heart of the defence who stole the defensive show.

Overall it was a joy to watch. With a number of u10s games coming up, we have to make sure that it is only the start! The 2016/17 season is fast approaching boys!

Ten out of Ten!

Midland Challenge Cup @ Heartlands Academy
Saturday 13th February 2016

Erdington and Saltley 10 – 2 Gloucester

Team: Rob, Sam, Kye, Diago, Rio, Cameron P, Kane, Tion, Pharrelle, Cameron E and Oakley

Goals: Kane x 3, Cameron P x 2, Cameron E x 2, Pharrelle x 3 and Sam

Man of the Match: Kane – what better way to celebrate your 11th Birthday, than by bagging your 37 goal of the season?

On a historic day when the girls and boys played on the same morning, at the same venue for the first time ever, the boys put on a performance of historic magnitude. It was a brilliant performance from start to finish and capped off a fine week, coming only 24 hours after paying off Jersey 2016 in full!

Much like two weeks ago against Sutton Coldfield, the game couldn’t have started any better for us, with Cameron P smashing the ball home one minute into the game. The build up play to our opening goal set our stall out for the remainder of the game, with the boys playing the ball from back to front with pace and invention. Within another few minutes we were two goals up after Cameron P bagged himself a brace. Fully in control of the game, we switched off and conceded a goal from a long free-kick. We should have dealt with it, but instead allowed the ball to bounce through to the Gloucester forward who cooly slotted the ball home to halve the deficit. Game on. However the boys regrouped and scored a third seconds before the ref blew his whistle for the end of the first third.

Now in control of the game, The Ton piled on the pressure during the second third and added to their three goals via Pharrelle, who added to the goal that he scored during the first third, and Cameron E. After celebrating his 10th birthday yesterday, the Marsh Hill sharp-shooter christened his new boots by grabbing his 8th u11s goal, to add to the 14 that he has scored for the u10s.

Despite being 5-1 to the good, we demanded more from the boys and asked them to move the ball quicker, rather than unnecessarily holding on to it. We made a number of changes by switching Kane from midfield to up front, Cameron P from the wing into the centre of midfield, Cameron E from up front on to the wing and by bringing Rio back into the fold. These changes seemed to give the lads a boost and resulted in them raising their effort levels. Adding five goals to their tally, the boys capped off a great team performance! Captain Kane grabbed a quick-fire hat-trick, whilst Sam scored for the second consecutive week and Cameron E accurately slotted in a second for himself.

Whilst the boys deserved their ten goals, the Gloucester boys (as ever) deserved a lot of credit. Their attitude was great throughout, their manners were impeccable and they represented their great district with distinction. We look forward to meeting up again in Jersey and hope the Sat Nav got them home safely!

What next for The Ton?

There is no game next weekend, but after that it is back to West Midlands League action, as we take on Solihull on Saturday 27th February.

Have a great week off school boys! You deserve it!

Ilani – Well done kid!!

image

This week was another proud week in the history of The Ton, after Ilani signed for the Villa!

Over the past three seasons eight of our boys who started the season playing Sunday football have signed for one of our local professional clubs. Perfect illustration of the great opportunity that district football is, as well as the wonderful links that we have with our local clubs.

Well done Ilani. We couldn’t be prouder of you! What a star. A Ton legend in the making!

Man of the Match:

Under 11s: Kye

Under 10s: Aidan

To say this morning was wet would be an understatement of epic proportions! To say our boys rolled their sleeves up, ignored the horrid weather and got on with it would be an even bigger understatement! It would have been easy for the lads to have used the terrible weather as an excuse for playing poorly. However it was quite the opposite! Both teams played some incredible football and even though the under 10s failed to get the rewards that their slick football deserved, we finished the morning overflowing with pride!

The u10s played out from the back at every possible opportunity and put together a number of fantastic moves, often moving the ball from back to front with ease. Despite hitting the woodwork on four occasions, having a shot cleared off the line and going agonisingly close on 782 occasions, the boys couldn’t add to Tiarno’s solitary goal. However regardless of the result, the boys ended the morning as winners, after playing the best football of the two teams throughout the game. Although saying that, one of the Bath goals was a stunner and definitely one for the scrapbook!

One of the most pleasing things about the performance of the u10s was the fact that three of the lads were u9s! When you consider the quality of our current u11s, the ability of our u10s and then the exciting crop of u9s that are coming through (Resharne, Reece, Aidan, Bobby and Patrick) it’s safe to say there is certainly something in the water around these parts! Talking of the u9 lads, Abbey pupil Aidan was making his debut today and in doing so following in the footsteps of his cousins Dermot (2013/14), Marc (2013/14, 2014/15) and Gerard (2015/16). Now that’s a talented family! Not only was Aidan making his debut today and playing against boys that were a year older than him, but he was also awarded Man of the Match for his composed performance.

I’m not really sure what happened in the u11s game, although Tonn has done nothing but rave about the quality of our play since this morning. He won’t shut up about it! I’m not sure if it’s a case of the ‘fisherman’s tale’ but he even claims that Tion’s goal was the culmination of a 20 pass move! The thing is, I actually believe him. A 20 pass goal is exactly what the u11s are capable of! It was also great to see six different scorers get their names on the score sheet. It just goes to show the quality that we have in this team!

A special mention must go to u10s player Kian, who made his debut for the u11s today after a number of solid performances for the u10s over recent weeks. In doing so, he becomes the fifth u1os player to play for the ‘big boys’ in 2015/16. I wouldn’t count on him being the last either!

Thank you Bath and everyone connected with this great district. After a two hour drive, I imagine the last thing that the lads wanted to do was play football in rain of that severity, and I can’t imagine the  parents were keen on standing out in it either! However all of Bath should be proud of their boys’ conduct throughout the morning. As ever Bath, it’s been a pleasure!

Next up is fellow good friends Gloucester. Hopefully we’ll have a little sun too!
