West Midlands’ 7-a-side

Saturday 8th November @ Wednesfield High School

Unfortunately we are limited to the number of lads that we are permitted to have in the match day squad. Therefore a number of lads must miss out this weekend for no other reason than we can’t fit everyone in. Please rest assured that Tonn and I are really proud of how well everyone has been playing of late and the decision regarding the final squad was a very difficult one to make. We hope to see everyone reunited in just over a week when we take on Wolves in a 9-a-side match.

Thank you for your understanding and support on this matter and I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing the squad the best of luck for the weekend.

The Under 11s End the Half Term in Style

Thursday 30th October 2014 @ Yardley and District Rugby Club

Erdington and Saltley 10 – 1 Chelmsley Colts

Squad: Harvey, Alfie, Shaun, Hayden, Brandon, Jacob, Callum, Tierry, Elijah, Ryaq, Kruize, Jermaine, Tristan, Teon, Shilo, Brayden,

Scorers: Shilo x 5, Jacob x 3, Teon and Jermaine

After the Under 10s put a show on the night before, it was the turn of the Under 10s to show what they were capable of. Against a talented and on form Chelmsley Colts team, it was a chance for some of the boys on the periphery of the squad to stake a claim for a starting place, whilst the established players had to prove why they are just that.

The game was split into three thirds, each consisting of 20 minutes. The Ton started the game brightly and played out from the back, attacking at pace and with a considerable degree of composure. After the first 20 minutes we were leading 4-0, after Shilo had turned on the style. Although, without the hard work of the midfield and stability of the defence/keeper, Mr Waldo wouldn’t have been able to score those goals. Tonn and I both noted how much our team spirit has developed since the start of the season and how each player looks out for their team mates. This sort of thing is priceless!

The second twenty minutes saw a raft of changes and to their credit the Chemsley boys battled back and actually won that period 1-0. However we were still pleased with the number of chances that the lads created, with Ryaq particularly menacing down the right for The Ton.

The final twenty minutes saw the goals start flowing again and before long the game was sewn up. Jacob scoring a hat-trick from defence is a standout highlight of the final third. The final score of 10-1 shouldn’t disguise the fact that our boys were made to work hard for their win. The Colts were high on confidence following a great start to their season and battled from the first to last whistle. They should all be proud of their efforts and we wish them well for the remainder of the season. A big thanks (once again!) to Wayne from Bromford Lions, who is fast becoming our ‘go to’ man when we need some help!

Well done boys for a great performance all round. There is no match this weekend as the Birmingham team is in action. Next up for some of you is the West Midlands 7-a-side Championship on Saturday 8th November.

Until we meet again…enjoy your football!

Feedback regarding the Under 10s’ performance vs. Bromford Lions

Stunning performance from the Ton from start to finish; free flowing football that Bromford struggled to contain through out the match. Several good performances from the Ton but Kane particularly was just too hot to handle.

Bromford Lions have enjoyed working with the District over the past few months and are happy to provide as much support as we can for the District and for Phil and Tonn, who do a fantastic job.

Looking forwards to creating even closer ties going forward, Good Luck for the season from all at Bromford Lions.

Thank you Wayne and thank you Bromford Lions!

Under 10s Put on a Great Show!

Wednesday 29th October 2014 @ Yardley and District Rugby Club

Bromford Lions 3 – 12 Erdington and Saltley

Team: Harvey, Sam, Kye, Harvey, Ilani, Kian, Kane, Jamie, Oakley, Tion, Cameron

Scorers: Kane x 5, Tion x 3, Cameron x 2, Kye, Oakley

Man of the Match: Kane

Under the glare of the floodlights, The Ton took on local team Bromford Colts. The under 11s played their Bromford counterparts during preseason and drew 1-1. Tonight was the turn of the young pups that make up the under 10s. They didn’t disappoint!

With Troy away on a half term school trip, The Ton were almost at full strength, with Ilani and Samim making their debuts. Cameron and Kane, who both played an instrumental part in the under 11s epic victory on Saturday, started the game off as they intended to go on! Straight from kick off, the Walsall and Villa boys ran through the Bromford denfence to give us the lead after a few seconds.

Goals continued to go in at regular intervals throughout the game, so I’m not going to go through each one in great detail! More important than the goals was the manner in which the lads conducted themselves. They worked hard as a team, both going forward and in defence, and constantly tried to play football the right way. Harvey played the ball out from the back every time that he had it, whilst all players were confident on the ball and prepared to take chances with it all over the pitch. There was no lumping it up-field whenever the ball found itself in defence. All of the lads were cool and composed when in possession and committed and determined when they lost it.

Once again Kian made a mockery of the fact that he is only in Year 4, as did fellow Phoenix under 9’s player Ilani, who came into the team for his debut. Birches Green pupil Samim was another of the debutants and he also had a great game, hitting the crossbar with a rasping drive. At the back Sam played like a young Paul McGrath, whilst Harvey and Kye were equally as resolute in defence. Jamie played in three different positions and did a sterling job in every role! Oakley and Tion gave Bromford plenty to think about from out wide and Cameron was both creative and powerful when in possession. In goal, Harvey led his young lions as the oldest member of the team. However the final word should go to the captain for the night Kane who grabbed himself five goals!

We would also like to say a huge thank you to Wayne and the rest of the Bromford gang for their great hospitality. The Bromford boys were great and never let their heads drop, constantly trying to attack and score. We wish them all the best for the rest of their season. What a great family club! Great attitude all round! Thanks guys.
