2018/19 Team Trials: Round One

Thank you to all of the boys and their parents who attended round one of the 2018/19 team trials.

Boys, you were a delight to work with from start to finish. Your attitude was exemplary. Not once did we have to talk to any boy about poor attitude. From start to finish you tried your best and gave it everything that you had. For that reason, you should be incredibly proud of your efforts.

I will be writing to your head teachers to tell them how you represented your schools with distinction.

Unfortunately it wasn’t possible for all of the boys to make it through to the second round but we thank everyone for taking part.

The Ton Boys Crowned BPSFA Cup Winners!

Friday 4th May 2018 @ Bodymoor Heath

BPSFA Chris Smith Cup Final 2018

Erdington and Saltley 1 – 0 Sutton Coldfield

Team: Padraig, Tyrese, James, Mason, Klechai, Reece, Callam, Daniel, Tavani, Oliver, Cian and Rhys

Scorer: Callam

Man of the Match: Daniel – he could not have given it more than he did. By the end of the game, he was out on his feet after supporting Cian in attack and protecting the defence all game.

Just like buses, trophies seem to come along in trios for The Ton! In a little over a month, the boys have gone from having nothing to show for their efforts this season, to having three trophies – Daniel Sturridge Cup, Midlands Challenge Trophy and Chris Smith Cup.

As has been the case all season, we were unable to name the same team in the final that we did in the semi-final stage. And as has been the case all season, there were times when the starting nine contained five under 10s.

Both factors only go further to highlight the fantastic achievement of the boys in yesterday’s final.

Against a Sutton Coldfield side who have been a huge credit to the BPSFA in 2017/18, winning four trophies so far and with another four in the pipeline, The Ton boys were certainly the underdogs going into the showpiece final. Pre-match talk centred around the need to stay positive and weather any storm that came our way as a united team. There was talk of noththing else. Unity was all we asked of the boys.

The first half was most notable for the return of captain Tyrese. Injured since the turn of the new year, the Birches Green shot stopper and leader has been sorely missed. A Ton stalwart for two years, 2017/18 has been far from kind to our formidable keeper. Yet while the blow of losing our number one was a tough one to take, it provided Padraig with an opportunity to step into the breach and he has done so with distinction since the start of 2018. So good has he been, that Padraig was deservedly named joint captain for the final, in acknowledgement of his importance to the side.

The opening 25 minutes was a tight affair, with neither team creating many clear cut chances and both threatening most from set pieces. Yet with Tyrese in goal and commanding his area brilliantly, Sutton were unable to capitalise from several dangerous balls.

Throughout the team, the boys defended valiantly as a unit. The moment one player lost the ball or was caught out of position, there was another Ton player there to back them up. This was the most pleasing feature about our first half effort.

The second half started brightly for Sutton Coldfield, as the Royals looked dangerous down either wing. A change of formation saw Tavani and Reece switching sides and this seemed to stem the flow of Sutton attacks. Tavani in particular was tenacity personified.

In the centre of the park, Daniel and Callam covered every blade of grass in their quest to open up the Sutton back line while protecting James, Mason and Klechai from the dangerous Sutton attack. Despite missing some talented defensive players, the back-three, now supported by Padraig, defended every ball by putting their bodies on the line and standing up to everything that Sutton had to throw at them. They were incredible.

As the game continued to open up, it was Callam who came closest to breaking the deadlock as he thundered a ferocious free kick cannoning off the crossbar. Yet rather than dwell on his misfortune, the midfield magician attacked the rebound and drove into the Sutton box. With two players on his back, he was forced to the ground and rightly awarded a penalty, which he calmly and bravely stepped up to take. Striking the ball low and to the right of the keeper, Callam reeled away in delight as his penalty nestled into the net to give the boys a 1-0 lead.

With 15 minutes to play, Sutton pushed forward in numbers in a bid to level the game, although inevitably this made Cian dangerous on the break. On one such occasion, the SS. Peter and Paul forward finished brilliantly only to be ruled offside.

Regretfully for The Ton, the game remained evenly balanced at 1-0 with plenty of time left on the clock.

A double substitution brought much needed reinforcement to the team, with Oliver strengthening the left hand side and Rhys shielding the defence in a deep lying midfield roll.

Twelve long minutes of determined, unwavering defensive work saw a number of the lads out cold on their feet. After running themselves into the ground, the boys had nothing more to give. The final whistle brought immense pride in arguably our biggest achievement of the season.

This victory is just rewards after a long season that has brought many tests for the boys. On a night they’ll never forget, the boys came of age.

Well done boys!

Girls and Boys Lift Silverware on Great Day for The Ton!

Saturday 28th April 2018

Girls: BPSFA 9-a-side Cup @ Bodymoor Heath Training Ground

Team: Madison, Millie, Javeigh, Amne, Kayla, Keeley, Liberty, Rihanna, Savannah, Lacy, Tiana and Latia

Results:

Won 1-0 vs South

Drew 0-0 vs Kings Norton

Won 3-0 vs Aston

Won 2-0 vs South (semi-final)

Won 1-0 Kings Norton (final)

Goals: Latia x 5 and Javeigh x 2

Boys: Midlands Challenge Cup @ Longlevens School, Gloucester

Team: Padraig, James, Louie, Ethan, Angelo, Mason, Enoch, Kian S, Callam, Toby and Tavani

Goals: Kian S and Jame

On a great day for The Ton, both the boys and girls of Erdington and Saltley lifted silverware after winning their respective competitions.

After making the trip down the M5 to Gloucester, the boys received a great welcome from their hosts, in what is always one of the best away days of the season. After picking up three wins from their opening three fixtures in the Midlands Challenge Cup, the lads knew they had to avoid defeat in order to claim the title.

In an entertaining affair, both sets of players gave their all, with the lead swinging from one direction to the next throughout the morning.

Our goals came from the boot of u10s midfielder and man of the match Kian S, plus another great free kick from James, his third in his last four games!

In far from spring-like weather, both Tonn and Lamar were proud of the team’s efforts and even prouder of the fact that they lifted their second trophy of a roller coaster season.

An hour up the road and closer to home, the girls took to the pitch at the home of Aston Villa – Bodymoor Heath. Fresh on the heals of being crowned ESFA Midlands 9-a-side champions, the girls were determined to claim more glory in the larger format of the beautiful game.

As the rain showed no sign of relenting, the girls brought a little ray of sunshine to the Ton Army who lined the pitch, finishing the day unbeaten and without conceding a goal.

More often than not it’s the goal scorers who claim the limelight and as Latia slotted away her 49th goal of the season, it was difficult to argue otherwise. However the defensive efforts of the team need to be praised, as the girls have now kept 10 clean sheets in their last ten games. This monumental achievement coincides with the arrival of Madison but it would be too simple to say it’s all down to the agile shot stopper. From front to back, the girls have worked their socks off and showed commitment of epic proportions. It’s thanks to their hard work that the team has been so solid in recent weeks.

Despite being drenched to the bone, the girls proudly lifted the cup aloft and celebrated their fifth piece of silverware in a season that just keeps on giving!

Well done boys!

Well done girls!

Boys cruise to cup final

Saturday 21st April 2018 @ Heartlands Academy, Nechells

BPSFA Chris Smith Cup qualifying tournament

Team: Padraig, Ethan, James, Mason, Klechai, Aidan, Toby, Reece, Daniel and Tavani

Goals: Daniel, James and Reece

Man of the Match: Daniel – Held the ball up superbly, tirelessly rain the channels and proved a force in midfield when dropped deeper.

Goals from Daniel, Reece and James ensured The Ton finished top of the qualifying table and will now contest the final of the BPSFA Chris Smith Cup for a fourth year in five. A trio of committed and positive performances from the boys, helped the boys finish with two victories and a draw from their three qualifying games.

There have been times this season when we have been our own worst enemy. Heads have dropped when they needed to be held high, tempers have flared when calmness was called for and silly arguments have got in the way of the business of being a team. At times we have played as individuals rather than as a team. However none of the above characterised today’s efforts.

This morning we were brilliant. From start to finish we were committed and hungry, working tirelessly for one another. The spirit amongst the boys was evident for all to see.

In our opening game we beat a battling Aston side by a single goal to nil. After dominating the game for the opening 16 minutes without reward, the boys would have been forgiven had they got frustrated. However, they continued to work hard and were rewarded when a sublime Reece cross was slotted away by the excellent lone striker Daniel.

After a scrappy opening half against South Birmingham, the boys turned on the style in their second game following the halftime break. With the South keeper in imperious form, it was left to centre-back James to break the deadlock via a stunning free kick from outside the area. Then with seconds left on the clock, Aidan pulled off an amazing game-changing block to prevent South from equalising, before releasing Reece on the break. As he closed down on the South goal, Reece controlled the ball and his nerves to coolly slot home to double our advantage.

The opening two wins were enough to guarantee The Ton a place in the final and meant the boys could enjoy their third and final game. With Toby rested following 40 minutes of selfless running, Ethan was restored to the team after recovering from a robust challenge in the opening encounter against Aston. The u9s defender once again made a mockery of the fact that he was playing two years up, putting in a great performance in the final game of the competition.

Just as Ethan had, Mason, Klechai and James all made a great contribution to the team’s defensive efforts, helping the boys to three clean sheets from their three games. Between the sticks, Padraig continued to build on the recent fabulous form that saw him chalk up a stack of clean sheets during the Easter holidays, pulling off two great saves in the South Birmingham game.

After coming into the side following Ethan’s injury against Aston, Tavani had a stormer, proving a threat to all three teams that we played. Aggressive and skilful, the St. Clements winger was a menace all morning, creating havoc down the right and left wings, as well as smashing a ferocious shot off the post that sent reverberations throughout Heartlands!

With the Sutton Coldfield game ending 0-0, it meant we ended the day unbeaten on 7 points and proved what we are capable when every ounce of effort is put towards the good of the team!

This could be a very exciting end to the season!

Well done boys!

Girls crowned champions of the Midlands!

Saturday 14th April 2018 @ St. George’s Park, Burton

English Schools’ FA – Premier League Cup – Midlands Round

Team: Madison, Millie, Sami, Lacy, Savannah, Tiana, Liberty, Javeigh, Octavia, Rihanna and Latia

Results:

D 0-0 vs. South Birmingham

W 2-0 vs. Kings Norton

W 5-0 vs. Corby

W 1-0 vs. Telford

D 0-0 vs. Sutton Coldfield

Scorers: Latia x 6, Octavia and Savannah

Girl of the Match: On a day like today it doesn’t seem right to pick one girl out for additional praise! Well done team!

David Beckham has a pitch named after him at St. George’s Park. The likes of Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford train there on a regular basis. Brum’s very own Eniola Aluko and Karen Carney have been put through their paces there on many an occasion. Now you can add the ESPSFA class of 2018 to this long and illustrious list of talented St. George’s Park residents!

In a season when the girls have repeatedly ripped up the history books, they matched a feat achieved by the lads in 2016 by being crowned ESFA Midlands Champions and in doing so, qualifying for the national finals later in the season! Furthermore, their unbeaten record and ability to keep five clean sheets from five games means they have now won four trophies in this historic season.

The day started with Ton panicking and nervously looking over his shoulder as the clock ticked down to kick-off and his team sheet was minus three players. Fortunately for him, as the first game kicked off, he had nine girls on the pitch and was able to relax slightly. Understandably the girls were a little unsettled going into their opening encounter, but managed to regroup and put in an admirable performance against 2017/18 rivals South Birmingham. Despite having a goal ruled out by the ref, the girls were more than happy with their opening performance.

Enter stage right – Octavia and Rihanna. With the team now up to 11 players, the girls were able to move into fifth gear and pick up a trio of great victories in succession.

A 2-0 victory over fellow Brummie district Kings Norton put the girls in first place after two games, a position they held onto for the rest of the day.

With the opening two games yielding four points, it was the defensive stability of Sami, Millie and Savannah that was gaining admiring glances from many a spectator. The defensive trio were proving an immovable object in their first ever 9-a-side game, although they also had a lot of support from recent recruit Madison, who has slotted between the sticks as if she has been there all season!

Our third game saw a deluge of goals for The Ton girls, with Latia continuing her fine season in front of goal to bag herself four goals as the girls cruised to a 5-0 victory.

Despite their excellent start to the tournament, the girls knew tough challenges awaited in the form of the unbeaten Sutton Coldfield and swashbuckling Telford and Wreakin. The latter were their fourth opponents and a Latia goal was enough to earn the girls a vital three points against one of the tournament favourites. In fact, these three points were enough to hand the title to the girls and with it, another piece of history!

With the title in the bag, the girls shuffled their pack for their final game of the day against near-neighbours Sutton Coldfield. Despite the changes made, the girls picked up their fifth clean sheet in their firth game, to end the day with the kind of defensive record that would be the envy of any famous Italian team!

There isn’t much more that can be said about these fabulous girls! From captain Liberty in the centre of the park, to the marauding Rihanna out wide and the tenacious Millie in defence, each one of the girls gave everything that they had to offer today. They played some excellent football and proved that hard work really does pay off.

The girls now move on to the national finals in Liverpool on June 9th, 2018.

In 2016, The Ton boys visited Manchester in the same stage of this competition, only to see torrential rain wash away their dreams of national glory. However, this group of girls have made their own history all season and even the stormiest of downpours wouldn’y be enough to wash away the feelgood factor surrounding them right now!

Well done girls!

Day 98 and it’s still raining. The constant rain threatened to ruin the Erdington and Saltley Easter Invitational as Hollyfields lay under an inch of surface water. Luckily for us, Heartlands Academy stepped in at the last minute to save the day and not for the first time!

Wirrall travelled to Nechells from Merseyside and brought with them a reputation for playing great football and for being one of the strongest districts in the country. From a little closer to home, North Warwickshire brought two teams to Heartlands to compete in their first competitive games of the season. Bringing the total of competing districts to four, Wolverhampton visited Heartlands for the third time in 2017/18.

Round one of the tournament saw the eight teams shared into two groups – the Ian Taylor group and the Lee Hendrie group – named after former Erdington and Saltley players. Erdington A, Wirral u11s, Wolverhampton A and Wirral u10s progressed through to the championship group, named after European Cup winner and former Erdington and Saltley midfielder, Gary Shaw. In the Darius Vassell plate competition, Erdington and Saltley B locked horns with the two North Warwickshire sides and Wolverhampton B.

With three wins from their final three games, the B team stormed to the title with a 100% record, six goals scored and none conceded. Up front, Alfie was at the centre of everything good to do with the team. Hard working and creative, he spurred his teammates on and put in a series of great performances for the gold team. With Louie solid in defence and Padraig commanding in goal, the B team kept 3 clean sheets on their way to lifting the plate trophy.

Over in the cup competition, Erdington A started slowly, succumbing to the superior finishing of Wirral under 11s and falling to a 2-0 defeat. With no time to dwell on the defeat, they dusted themselves off to put in a fine showing against eventual winners Wirral u10s, only to miss several chances en route to a 0-0 draw. Despite failing to score in their opening two group matches, the A team played some excellent football and created a number of chances. Their effort paid dividends against Wolverhampton A, with Daniel finishing off a great team goal to give the lads the victory that their performances deserved. In their six games, the A team kept five clean sheets and only lost the single game.

Overall it was a very good day for the boys. Against quality opposition, the boys showed that they’re a force to be reckoned with and a match for anybody.

A huge thank you to all of the visiting districts and congratulations to Wirral u10s who won the cup competition. It was a pleasure to host three excellent districts and we look forward to playing them again in the future.

Man of the Match – Toby and Padraig for the A team. Five clean sheets from six games is a testament to their defensive quality. At the other end of the pitch, Alfie scored a double hat-trick to bag the MoM award for the B team.

Well done boys!

Under 10s Girls Shine in the Pouring Rain

Wednesday 4th April 2018 @ Hollyfields Club, Erdington

Erdington and Saltley u10s vs Woking u10s and South Birmingham u10s

Lost 2-1 vs. Woking

Won 4-0 vs. South Birmingham

Lost 2-0 vs. Woking

Team: Madison, Millie, Amne, Kayla, Lacy, Rihanna, Tiana, Savannah and Latia

With our three under 11s girls playing on the adjacent pitch for Birmingham Primary Schools and the rain pouring, today was far from easy for the under 10s members of the Ton squad. Yet as we’ve seen all season, these girls are a great bunch!

In our first game, the girls made the most of the fact that there was some grass to play on, stringing together a number of passes before captain Latia rifled the ball home for a 1-0 lead. In midfield, Rihanna was a physical menace, breaking up play at will and managing to stay on her feet in the thickest of mud! As time wore on and the rain continued to pour, conditions worsened, rendering it far from easy to play football. With minutes to play, we were still in front, only to see Woking dramatically snatch the victory in the dying moments of the game.

With no time to dwell on the Woking result, the girls bounced back to claim a 4-0 victory over 2017/18 rivals South Birmingham. With a brace from Savannah, a goal apiece from Latia and Lacy, some probing runs from Tiana and some excellent defending from Millie, Kayla and Amne, the girls were in control from the start of the game, giving us all plenty to be excited about ahead of 2018/19.

Alas the final game proved one step to far for the girls, as Woking turned on the style to make easy work of the muddy conditions. With their greatest threat coming down the wings, Woking scored a couple of great team goals and simply played better than we did. There’s no shame in losing to a better team on the day!

Overall it was a great day for the girls! With the year 6 girls playing for the City of Birmingham side and the year 5 girls proving next season could be even better than this, it was a great day indeed!

The final word goes to debutante Madison, who stepped between the posts for the first time and effortlessly blended in with the squad to give the impression that she had been around all season!

Well done girls!

Ton Trio Make History – Girls BPSFA

Wednesday 4th April 2018 @ Hollyfields Club, Erdington

Birmingham Primary Schools’ FA vs. Woking Schools’ FA

BPSFA (A Team) 1 – 0 Woking A

BPSFA (B Team) 0 – 3 Woking B

BPSFA (A Team) 0 – 2 Woking A

BPSFA (B Team) 3 – 1 Woking B

Sami, Liberty and Javeigh all left their Ton jersey in the cupboard today before donning the colours of Birmingham Primary Schools’ FA in a history making game. For several years, the boys’ districts have united on an annual basis to compete as the City of Birmingham. However today was the first time that the girls’ districts have come together as one under the colours of Brum.

Just like she has done all season for The Ton, Liberty captained Birmingham, setting up the A team’s goal in their first game against Woking. At the back, Sami was a rock, whose presence was sorely missed when she departed the action in the A team’s second game. In midfield, Javeigh linked up superbly with fellow Ton player Liberty, helping add some steel to the side.

In a season of history making, today was yet another example why this group of girls are so special!

Well done girls!

Donated by former Aston PSFA district footballer Daniel Sturridge, the eponymous competition is one of the stand out competitions on the BPSFA district calendar. Since first being played for in 2015, it has been won by Erdington and Saltley, Sutton Coldfield and South Birmingham, in that order.

Yesterday morning saw The Ton become the first district to claim the prestigious title for a second time, with the A team finishing the morning unbeaten. Yet the B Team also deserve great credit for their morning’s work, despite results not going their way on the day. A pair of great results against pre-tournament favourites South Birmingham A the highlight of the morning for the lads.

Both teams started the day by making a statement. First the A team outclassed a quality Sutton Coldfield team, restricting them to very few chances and creating a number of their own, before running out 1-0 winners. However it was the B Team who made the biggest opening statement, picking up a 1-0 win against the quality-laden South A team. With the score 0-0 entering the closing minute, Alfie muscled his way through the South defence before finishing brilliantly to snatch all 3 points.

While results did not quite go their way after that, the B Team certainly played well all morning, only to be thwarted by the woodwork and inspired goalkeeping in their quest for further points. Despite the obvious frustration of failing to find the goals that would have fired them to glory, the B Team boys stayed positive throughout and played some excellent free-flowing football, working superbly as a united team.

Solid in defence, the A Team didn’t suffer from the same problem as the B team, scoring a tournament high nine goals as they beat all before them to lift the cup. With Cian, Daniel and Resharne linking up brilliantly throughout the tournament, the boys were a joy to watch.

With a defender being crowned a player of the tournament (Kayden from Sutton Coldfield) it was fitting that our defensive units also had a great tournament. From Louie and Mason in the B Team to Toby and Aidan in the A team, we defended resolutely to protect Padraig between the sticks, the latter of whom once again filled in for both sides.

Overall this victory is undoubtedly one of the highlights of our season and an example of why we should all be so proud of our district and community.

Well done boys!

Young Guns Dig Deep for Fine Draw

Saturday 24th March 2018 @ Heartlands Acadmey, Nechells

Erdington and Saltley 2 – 2 Brierley Hill and Dudley

Team: Padraig, Mason, James, Louie, Callam, Alfie, Cian L, Klechai, Che, Ethan and Tavani

Goals: Callam x 2

Man of the Match: Mason – as one of the stand out players, along with Cian, Callam and Padraig, Mason demonstrated his ability to roll up his sleeves and do his fair share of the dirty work! On a number of occasions he covered for teammates and helped protect Padraig’s goal with distinction.

Against a team bursting at the seams with academy boys, the young Ton warriors dug deep to grab a deserved share of the points after twice being behind at Heartlands.

The opening 20 minutes was not up to the standards that we set ourselves, with only two or three players actually giving it everything they had. As a team, we were slow and cumbersome and fortunate to enter the break only one goal behind. Dudley showed why they’re such a feared team, passing the ball with confidence, as well as being physical in defence.

After some harsh, but fair words, the boys began the middle-third with greater purpose and energy. Their renewed vigour was rewarded five minutes into the twenty when Callam finished off beautifully to level the score. That goal gave the team a huge boost and only bad luck prevented them from ending the third with a 3-1 lead. After earning a free kick just inside the Dudley half, captain James fired in a brilliant shot from distance, only to see it smash against the cross bar and bounce over the line (or at least we thought it did!). However it was too difficult for the ref to see, such was the pace at which it happened and the score remained 1-1. After entering the game during the first break, the dangerous and tenacious Tavani then inadvertently cleared a goal-bound shot off the Dudley line and over the bar!

Despite these moments of bad luck, the boys were more than happy with their efforts in the second twenty and began the final third full of confidence. Alas it was short lived, as Dudley retook the lead moments after the restart of the match. A moment of hesitation in the Ton defence allowed Dudley to get in behind and a team of such quality do not need asking twice! 2-1 to Dudley with 20 minutes to play.

Refusing to give up, the boys picked themselves up and attacked the Dudley goal once again. With Ethan bringing much needed energy to midfield, Callam and Cian linked up superbly, as they had done all game, allowing Callam a clear run on goal, only to see his effort brilliantly saved. Fortunately he was more lethal the next time he got in on goal and levelled with his second of the game.

Over recent weeks our performances have not returned the results our efforts merited. However yesterday we finally got some just rewards for our commitment and determination. To twice come from behind against a side battling for silverware is something to be incredibly proud of! The boys showed great character and did themselves proud!

Well done boys!

Up The Ton!
