Man of the Match: Everyone!

I’m writing this from Portsmouth Port, on my way to Guernsey with school, having been deprived sleep for the past 24 hours. Therefore please forgive me if the details are a little sketchy! I’ll give it my best shot…

For the third year in a row The Ton were in town for the final of the West Midlands County Schools FA Cup. After losing to Wolverhampton in 2014, the boys of 2015 shared the cup after drawing with Redditch. However the class of 2016 were determined to go one step better by becoming the first Birmingham district to win the cup since the 1980s when Saltley lifted the title.

image

The game started brightly for the Brummie boys, as The Ton controlled the opening 15 mins and dominated possession. After taking the lead via captain Kane, the boys continued to knock on the Dudley door only to find the woodwork and keeper in the way. Such is the cruel nature of football that Dudley levelled the game in the 18th minute following their first attack of the game. Rocked by this blow, the boys lost their way a little in the closing stages of the first 25.

Following a few honest words at half time, the boys came to life during the second 25, bagging seven goals for none in reply. A truly breathtaking half of football that Dudley, for all of their efforts, simply couldn’t live with. Our West Midlands rivals worked their socks off but found The Ton in formidable form.

image

It’s hard to recall all of the goals, although there were some stunners, including some great runs and finishes from Samim and Kane. Plus a trademark cool finish from Troy, a long distance screamer from Cameron and a brace of goals for striker wannabe Sam.

image

Overall the boys couldn’t have given us anymore in that second period. Throw into the mix a commanding defensive performance from Tion, Sam, Kye and later from Ilani and Taylor and you begin to understand how good the boys were. Also let’s not forget Robbo between the sticks. Once again the sum of our parts far exceeded the value of us as individuals. In all of the years that I’ve been involved with district football I have never been so blessed as to work with a group of boys with such a strong spirit and sense of what it is to be a team.

image

With one more set of games to go, it’s hard to imagine this season ever being bettered. Ever. Eight trophies and a load of records. What a team!

2016/17 Under 10s Squad

Due to the awful weather on Friday, the second of the under 10s trials had to be abandoned. It will now take play in approximately two weeks. However as the boys from the first trial have been waiting for a week to find out if they made the team, I am going to name part of the final squad now.

Please note, although the named boys are definitely in the 2016/17 squad, the boys who still have to compete their second trial could still be added as additional squad members. This does not impact their chances of making the squad, I simply couldn’t keep the boys from trial one waiting for any longer.

It is with great pleasure to announce that the following players have been picked to represent the district next season:

Year Four in 2016/17

Alfie – Abbey
Toby – Abbey
Che – Erdington Hall
Jeval – Featherstone
Kian – Heathlands

Year Five in 2016/17

Recharne – Brookvale
Reece -St Mary and St John
Aidan – Abbey
Bobby – Brownmead
Aaron – Audley
Klechai – Yenton
Connor – Audley
Fareed – St. Wilfred’s
Liam – Audley
Tyrese – Birches Green
Jaiy – St. Peter and St. Paul
James G – Abbey
Patrick – Abbey

To all of the boys that didn’t make the squad, please keep your head held high and continue showcasing your talents for your school and Sunday league teams. The fact that you’ve not made the team does not make you a bad player. In fact you’ve done amazing this year and should be incredibly proud! Thank you for giving it 100%. It has been a pleasure.

Also thank you parents for your continued support.

The Ton End Breathtaking Sutton Coldfield Rivalry in Style!

Tuesday 7th June 2016 @ Heartlands Academy

West Midlands County Schools’ FA Cup Semi-final

Erdington and Saltley 8 – 3 Sutton Coldfield

Team: Rob, Kye, Sam, Tion, Ilani, Kane, Rio, Samim, Cameron P and Troy

Goals: Troy x 3, Kane x 2, Rio, Sam and Samim

Man of the Match: Troy

Ahead of the match my stomach was in a thousand pieces. I felt sick. At times during the first 20 minutes, I was left holding my stomach in pain. The nerves and excitement were getting the better of me.

About two weeks ago I turned 32 years of age. Around 10 days ago I got a new job for September; I will be a Deputy Head Teacher. I’m not self promoting myself here, but stating these facts as a means of proving I should know better! I shouldn’t feel like this!

However this group of lads are special. This group of lads have given us 12 months of memories and experiences that we will never forget. They’re the gift that keeps on giving! They make you feel like this!

Last night saw them square up against Sutton Coldfield for the last time in 2015/16. The 67th and final time! What a rivalry it has been too! I think you would be hard pushed to find such a rivalry no matter how far back you went in the schools football history books! There has been some cracking encounters this season and last night was no different.

The first twenty minutes may have been a little scrappy but it did see us have plenty of the ball and test the Sutton keeper from distance four or five times. However we fell behind thanks to a sucker punch of a goal when Sutton converted their first corner of the evening. Undaunted, the lads picked themselves up and continued to pepper the Sutton goal, although often from distance and rarely causing major trouble for our north Birmingham rivals. That was until we converted a corner of our own! Swinging in a beautiful corner from the left, Samim dropped the ball onto the forehead of Sam, who smashed the ball into the back of the net. Game on!

Flying out of the traps at the start of the second twenty, the boys took the lead for the first time when captain Kane carried the ball through the centre of the park before unleashing a left footed long-distance rocket, after spotting the Sutton keeper momentarily out of position. With momentum well and truly on their side, The Ton bagged a further two goals, courtesy of goals from the lively Rio and Troy. At the back, the fantastic defence, who were being brilliantly shielded by Ilani, kept Sutton at bay and ensured we ended the third 4-1 up.

The message at this point was clear: Work hard and keep it simple. No silly business and the final would be ours.

I’m still not sure if the boys really listened to me as four more goals is hardly keeping it simple! However on this occasion I have no issue with being ignored!

Those four goals came from Troy, who completed his hat trick and bagged his 38th and 39th goals of the season, Samim and Kane. Samim’s goal was a perfect example of how to counter-attack in style. After the defence repelled a Sutton attack, Kane picked the ball up in the left back position before opening his stride and sprinting down the left hand channel. Overlapping him, Samim picked up Kane’s through-ball before closing in on goal and slotting the ball away for the seventh Ton goal of the game. With Cameron now back on the pitch and creating chances down the wing, following a brief injury forced break, another couple of goals could possibly have come our way.

In between our four third-period goals, Sutton bagged a brace of goals of their own. However considering they were now playing with three or four men up front, the defence did a great job at batting away a number of dangerous Sutton attacks.

This report couldn’t be ended without a special mention to Kane. A number of weeks ago he broke Shilo Waldo’s record for the number of goals in a single season when he scored his 45th goal of the season. More impressively, last night was the night when he shattered Mr Waldo’s all-time goal scoring record. Just like the former St. Matthew’s sharp shooter, Kane has played for The Ton for two seasons and during that time he has now scored 76 goals, which is two more than the previous all-time record. What an achievement!

However, I know Mr Taylor would be the first to point something out and that is the fact that his remarkable achievement was made all the more possible due to the team that he plays in each week. I’ve never known a group of boys with such a strong sense of unity and team spirit. I’ve never known a group of boys back each other up in the manner that this lot do. What a team!

Now it’s time to refocus our attentions and look towards Saturday’s final against Dudley and Brierley Hill.

Thank you Sutton for the season of our lives! It’s been a pleasure sharing the pitch with you so many times this season and an honour to play out so many close, thrilling encounters!

Only three more get-ups until the final boys!

Up The Ton!

There’s no doubt about it, the class of 2016 has put Erdington and Saltley on the national map. Throughout the season this set of boys have continued to break records, turn heads, win admirers and make new friends the length and breadth of the country.

After hearing about our exploits, Derby County FC invited the boys along to their plush Moor Farm training complex for a half-term friendly match. It was a great honour to be invited and one that the Derby County coaching team are glad they made, after describing our lads as “class” following a brilliant game.

The format of the game was different to what we are used to, with the first two quarters being played at 7-a-side and the final two quarters at 8-a-side. In effect it was two games rolled up into one. The 7-a-side game ended 1-1, with Debry County edging the bigger format 2-1. Personally I think a draw would have been a fair result as our lads were fantastic but lets not take anything away from our hosts who were excellent!

After Cameron was brought down in the box following a stunning run down the left, captain Troy was left to slot the penalty away to give us a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately the Derby County boys struck back almost instantly following a fine team move.

Half way through the game and the scores were level. The Ton were very much still in the game!

The third quarter saw Cameron pushed upfront, a move which proved profitable when the Gunter finisher finished expertly past the onrushing Derby County shot stopper. Once again we found ourselves in the lead. However once again Derby County struck back quickly to level the game at two goals apiece.

With the clock ticking down in the final quarter, Derby County took the lead for the first time in the game; once again it was a beautiful goal that fully deserved the applause it received.

No matter how hard we tried, we just couldn’t find the equaliser and the game ended 3-2 to the hosts.

Despite the loss, it was once of the most enjoyable games of an amazing season. Both sets of boys played with heart, whilst managing to find the right balance between physical football and free-flowing football. It was a joy to watch and yet another reason why the lads should be immensely proud of themselves.

As this mammoth season draws to a close, we’re all left wanting it to go on just that little bit longer!

Man of the match: All of the boys did themselves justice and no one looked out of place out there yesterday. All over the pitch, boys played like men. From goalkeeper through to striker. However Rio just nicks the man of the match accolade after impressing equally in defence and midfield.

Well done all of you! You’re a bunch of stars!

Up The Ton!
