Girls’ Player Lois Picked for County Development Squad!

On Thursday 28th January Lois (The Abbey) attended trials for the Birmingham County FA Player Development Centre, before receiving news yesterday that she had been successful! What a star! Everyone connected to the district and her school are incredibly proud of her! Well done you star!

Here is some more information about the Birmingham County FA Player Development Centre:

Birmingham FA continues to support The FA’s Girls’ England Talent Pathway, which aims to identify, develop, and progress female players with the potential to play for the England Women’s Senior teams.

There is now a clear pathway in place that caters for the needs of the player, with each stage specifically designed to ensure appropriate progressive opportunities are in place.

A PDC is a County FA run centre designed to complement grassroots football by providing selected players with an additional nights training with specialist coaches once a week. The purpose of the PDC is to bridge the gap between grassroots and Centre of Excellence football and support players to embark on the Talent Pathway.

Entry to the programme is via trials after which successful players can expect to receive specialist weekly coaching and support, and is ideal for talented players looking to progress or for those that are not quite ready for Centre of Excellence football. In addition, players will attend fixtures against other FA Licensed Development Centres in the Midlands.

West Midlands Schools’ FA – Under 11s Division One

Erdington and Saltley 1 – 1 Sutton Coldfield

Team: Rob, Sam, Diago, Taylor, Samim, Tion, Cameron P, Kye, Rio and Pharelle

Goal: Cameron P

During the past 7 or 8 weeks we have played Sutton Coldfield a fair few times, in fact today was our seventh encounter! However this only illustrates the superb season that both teams are having as most of those games were finals! Nevertheless it’s fair to say that we’re all Suttoned out and I’m sure they’re all Erdingtoned out too!

We knew that today’s game would be the last for a while, as well as being the start of our West Midlands Schools’ FA campaign. There were some very disappointed players following last week’s Daniel Sturridge Cup final defeat and this is something that we talked about prior to today’s game. The message to the lads was simple – Fight. Fight more. Don’t stop fighting.

The most pleasing thing about today’s game was that the lads ran for every ball, jumped for every header and smashed every tackle. They couldn’t have tried any harder and certainly improved on last week’s Sutton encounter.

The game couldn’t have started any better for us, as Cameron charged down the left chasing a seemingly lost cause, before brilliantly keeping the ball in and slotting it home. One-nil after only 13 seconds! It was without doubt our best start of the season.

For the next 45 minutes we battled heroically and ran ourselves into the ground. It wasn’t pretty, and at times it was fairly ugly, but that didn’t bother me one bit. The lads were fighting and giving it everything that they had.

Chances were few and far between but five minutes into the final third, Sutton Coldfield managed to equalise. For the next five minutes we lost our way a bit and the goal seemed to have knocked the lads. Just when it looked like Sutton would push for a second, the lads found their rhythm again and steadied the ship, coming close a couple of times in the closing minutes of the game.

Overall the lads should be incredibly proud of their shift today. They gave it everything that they had and made us all immensely proud! It was just what the doctor ordered!

Well done to the Sutton boys, who also gave it 110%. However don’t take this the wrong way lads, but it’ll be nice to take on Bath next week! I’m sure we’ll meet again before too long!

Man of the Match: Tion – this was a tough one to pick as all of the boys worked their socks off. However Tion was the very definition of committed. Sitting in front of the back three, he protected his defence superbly and remained disciplined throughout the game. Well done kid!

Sorry the delay in publishing my ramblings, but work has taken over my life since Saturday. Amateur (very amateur) football coach by day, aspiring head teacher by night. Anyway…

The under 10s got their final morning off to a flying start when they raced into a 2-0 lead against Harborne, after scoring two quality goals. Cameron E’s goal was textbook! Rolled out by keeper Gerard, Kian picked up the ball before playing it down the line to Blessing, the Court Farm wing wizard then played a smart one-two with Cameron, who slotted the ball away sweetly.

However the lads couldn’t hold onto the lead and conceded four goals to a resurgent Harborne, whose fighting spirit was a thing of beauty.

After a few truthful words (from the boys – not me!), the lads dusted themselves off and picked themselves up for East Birmingham. It was great to see the lads take responsibility for their own post-match reflection, something that showed great maturity!

Against East they controlled the game for large parts, with lone defender Taylor imperious at the back. Despite having most of the ball and a number of chances, the boys just couldn’t make the breakthrough. Refusing to give up, the boys kept on plugging away until the final kick, when Taylor rifled home a free kick with the final seconds slipping away! Perseverance!

Overall the past three weeks have been a brilliant learning experience for the boys and they’ve come on leaps and bounds! Well done lads!

Next up was the U11s, who finished the Daniel Sturridge league stage as the only team with a 100% record and the only team to concede no goals. The way in which they bossed Harborne was truly a thing of beauty. For spells in the game they retained the ball for upwards of five minutes, passing it around the pitch like a mini-Barcelona.

As they knew at the start of the morning, it would be Sutton Coldfield in the final (again!) and once again it was a final settled by the odd goal. Unable to find the free flowing football that had characterised their earlier game, The Ton just couldn’t get going. This owes much to Sutton’s work rate and commitment, as they simply refused to let us get into our flow. After going two goals down, the boys picked themselves up and started to get into their groove. After pulling a goal back through Troy, the boys simply ran out of time and the silverware was Sutton’s.

As we’ve done on three occasions already this season, we’ll pick ourselves up and go again. There is still too much to play for this season for us to sulk and feel sorry for ourselves. With every blow comes an opportunity to grow and become stronger.

This is exactly what we will do, starting this Saturday against…Sutton!

Come on boys!!!!

The Ton Blow Hot on Cold Morning

Daniel Sturridge Cup 2016: Round Two

The Ton 1 – 0 Sutton Coldfield

The Ton 7 – 0 East Birmingham

Scorers:

Kane x 3, Troy x 2, Kye x 2, Ilani x 1

The Ton 0 – 1 Sutton Coldfield

The Ton 4 – 0 East Birmingham

On a cold and frosty morning, the boys waited anxiously for confirmation that the games would go ahead. Once all three referees had inspected the surface and given it the thumbs up, it was time to roll up our sleeves and tackle our old friends Sutton Coldfield.

It was a tight game throughout, with The Ton arguably having the better of the ball, particularly during the first three quarters of the game. With Rio starting in defence, the lads looked to switch play and attack at every opportunity. Sutton were pressing us high up the pitch and getting very tight on us every time we got the ball, we played some lovely passing football in order to get ourselves out of trouble on a number of occasions.

The goal came courtesy of a Kane direct free kick and it was no less than we deserved. However Sutton Coldfield are a quality outfit, as we know only too well and they put us under a lot of pressure throughout the final quarter of the game. Fortunately we managed to see out the game and claim the three points.

Our second game saw another shuffle of the pack, with Rio being asked to marshal a defence of one, and Kane and Troy linking up to form a mouth-watering attack. The attacking line-up worked a treat, with the lads scoring seven goals during 20 pulsating minutes. Four of those goals came from Troy and Kane, although if it wasn’t for the heroics of the East Birmingham keeper they’d surely have had more. In midfield, Ilani was bossing the centre of the pitch, whilst Cameron, Kye and Samim provided a constant threat down the wings. It was possibly our best illustration of attacking football this season. Roll on the final!

Next up was the B Team, which was once again made up largely of u10 players. Che, Ilani, Taylor, Cameron E, Kian and Gerard certainly showed the older, bigger boys how it should be done! In a game where we created multiple chances, three of which crashed off the woodwork and another that was cleared off the line, we fell victim to a Sutton Coldfield sucker punch when they scored against the run of play.

Following that blow, we told the boys that they had to be more clinical during their second game, which is exactly what they did! With William and Ilani solid at the back, Che and Oakley were able to attack East Birmingham from wide positions, the former using his blistering pace to great effect. In the centre of the park Pharrelle was working his socks off, creating a number of chances for Cameron up front. The Marsh Hill Primary School finisher bagged himself a brace, before Taylor and Rio smashed in a goal a piece. The 4-0 win was exactly what the doctor ordered, after the young B team had narrowly lost their first three games of the new year.

Overall the lads should be incredibly proud of their efforts, with a special mention reserved for the three u11 boys who acted as mentors for the u10 lads – Tion, Oakley and Pharrelle. Well done lads!

Now what? We have one more game to play in the league stage of the competition, although we have already made the final, where we’ll meet Sutton Coldfield. This will be the fifth final that we have made this season and the fifth time that we’ve played Sutton Coldfield in a final this season. Deja Vu! It’s sure to be a screamer!

Men of the Match:

Under 11s – Rio: The Birches Green baller normally plays on the wing but today he was asked to drop back into defence and did a sterling job, initially with Sam but then on his own. Two games, two wins and zero conceded.

Under 10s – Ilani: A number of the boys could make a strong claim for this honour after performing brilliantly. However Ilani did it for both the u10s and u11s so it’s only fair that he picks up the MoM award.

Well done lads, you certainly warmed everyone up this morning!

Saturday 9th January 2016 @ Heartlands Academy

Daniel Sturridge Cup Round One

Team A: Rob, Sam, Kye, Rio, Kane, Cameron P, Troy, Samim, Tion and Okaley

Team B: Gerard, Taylor, Blessing, Kian, Che, Resharne, Ilani, Cameron E, William, Samim, Harvey, Tion and Oakley

U11s:

The Ton 6 – 1 Wolverhampton

The Ton 5 – 0 Aston

U10s:

The Ton 0 – 2 Wolverhampton

The Ton 0 – 1 Aston

The Ton 2 – 0 Sutton Coldfield

Goals: Kane x 5, Troy x 3, Samim x 2, Blessing x 1, Cameron x 1, Blessing x 1

After a number of inactive weeks, the boys put their selection boxes to one side and dusted off their boots, before slipping back into action as if they hadn’t been away. Furthermore today was also the day when the under 10s stepped it up in terms of the quality of their opponents, as they tackled three different u11s districts.

First up were the u11s, who raced into a three goal lead against Wolverhampton, thanks to some lovely neat interplay between Kane, Troy, Cameron and Rio. Another goal came and leading four goals to nil, we decided to go with one at the back and a second man up front, as Samim stepped into the action. Prior to Christmas the Birches Green schemer was in sublime form, scoring 9 goals (second only to Kane’s 10) to help The Ton lift the BPSFA Futsal Championship, and he picked up where he left off, scoring a great goal to cap off a fine 6-1 victory.

Our second game saw us square up against near neighbours Aston. Despite dominating the opening exchanges, we couldn’t find the back of the net with our first few chances. Just when we thought it was going to be one of those days, we scored a goal, and then a second and a third. Now controlling the game, the boys played some majestic one touch football, playing the ball out from the back and through the thirds. The crowd were clearly enjoying what they were being served and by the end of the game The Ton had secured a 5-0 victory.

Next up were the u10s, who were determined to build on the thumping 22-1 victory which came in their final game of 2015. Not only were they up against u11s teams this morning, but they were up against u11 district teams. A whole new challenge compared to u10s opposition.

Controlling their first game (Wolverhampton), the boys looked right at home in this company. Despite having most of the ball they unluckily fell behind to Wolves, before conceding a second late on as they pushed for an equalised. Nonetheless it was a great first game, packed full of positives!

The second game saw a similar pattern of play, with the lads doing themselves proud and matching their older opponents for the vast majority of the game. A 1-0 loss was far from what they deserved.

Their final match saw the fruits of their efforts come to ripe, with a 2-0 win over a talented Sutton Coldfield team. The most pleasing thing about this final game was the manner in which they moved the ball around and the way they they competed physically with their older and stronger peers.

Overall a superb morning and a great way to kick off 2016! Exciting times indeed!

Let’s end with a quote from arguably the greatest ice-hockey player to ever grace the NHL:

“The highest compliment that you can pay me is to say that I work hard every day, that I never dog it.”– Wayne Gretzky

These words sum up today’s efforts perfectly!

Men of the Match:

U11s – Kane/Troy

U10s – Ilani
