Top Ten as Boys kick of their league campaign in style

Saturday 30th September 2017 @ Holte Secondary School, Aston

Aston 0-10 Erdington and Saltley

Team: Tyrese (c), Louie, James, Klechai, Toby, Jiay, Enoch, Che, Mason, Callam, Cian L, Reece and Rhys

Goals: Reece x 5, Jaiy x 2, Cian L x 2 and Mason

Man of the Match: Jaiy – when you win the award ahead of a team mate who bagged five goals, you know you were on fire! Jaiy was at the centre of everything that we did yesterday. Everything. A masterful performance and a pleasure to watch. Well done Jaiy!

10:26am, four minutes before kick off and we had six players. It was far from the perfect start to a morning that ended in glorious style.

10:30am, as the ref blew to signal the start of the 2017/18 West Midlands County Schools FA League campaign, we had nine players on the pitch, although the frantic start to the game meant we were far from cohesive. Fortunately we rallied in style and took an early two goal league as school mates Cian and Jaiy stuck the ball in the back of the net for The Ton. After the first third, our lead was a comfortable 3-0 and we now had a full squad following the late arrivals of Toby and Reece. The final goal of the first period was a spectacular team affair, with Toby, Jaiy, Enoch and Cian all linking up superbly in a free-flowing passing move – it really was a joy to watch.

The middle period saw Reece come into the fray and pick up a goal, alongside a second for Jaiy to make the score 5-0 to The Ton. In truth, the middle twenty saw our play become a little scrappier as too many players drifted into the middle of the pitch, making it very congested. Nevertheless the quality of the goals continued to excite the watching crowd.

After being told to spread out and use the whole of the pitch, the lads took full control of the game during the final third, scoring five goals and protecting their clean sheet. While the attackers will naturally draw praise for their play and great goals, such as the volley scored by Mason or top corner screamer by Reece, the defence and keeper deserve a great deal of praise too! James was a commanding presences in the heart of the defence, with Klechai and Louie marshalling the flanks expertly. In goal, Tyrese played the role of the sweeper-keeper like a young Manuel Neuer!

Throughout the team, boys played with aggression, flair and bravery. There was no moaning or groaning and a great deal of teamwork. It really was a joy to behold!

Finally, the performance and result was made even more satisfying by the presence and efforts of five u10s lads – Che, Cian, Neil, Rhys and Toby.

To their credit, Aston refused to give in and actually had their best chances late in the game, therefore illustrating their determination to keep going until the final whistle.

Well done boys! What a game!

September Round-up

Saturday 16th September 2017 @ Colney Heath

Young Erdington and Saltley side travel south and leave unbeaten following four great performances. With players filling in a number of different rolls, it was great to see the flexibility and potential of the squad. It was also great to see the five u10s step up to the challenge of competing against older u11s players, as well as the manner in which the older boys took the lead.

Results from the St. Albans Festival:

W 1-0 vs. St. Albans

D 0-0 vs. Dacorum

D 1-1 vs. Wokingham

W 2-0 vs. Woking

Saturday 30th September 2017 @ Heartlands Academy

BPSFA 6-a-side Championship

A morning of near misses, fine margins and frustrations! One more goal for either team. One more victory. That’s all it would have taken to qualify for the knock-out round and the chance to retain the trophy we won in both 2015 and 2016. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be and the boys were left to rue the missed chances. Nevertheless, Tonn, Lamar and Scott, who took the teams, saw more than enough positives to remain highly optimistic ahead of the new league season on Saturday 30th September.

Girls Continue to Grow

Thursday 14th September 2017 @ Hollyfield Club, Erdington

Erdington and Saltley W – L South Birmingham

Team: Liberty, Latia, Tiana, Millie, Lacy, Amne, Rihanna, Savannah, Kayla, Octavia and Sami

Goals: Liberty, Latia, Lacy, Rihanna, Savannah and Octavia

Girl of the Match: Liberty

What a joy this team of girls are! Funny, friendly, hardworking, talented and determined – they have the lot!

Thursday was another showing of their undeniable talent and another reason for us all to be proud of them! From start to finish they were brilliant. Both on and off the ball, the girls gave it everything that they had. ALL of them!

After racing into an early three goal lead, the girls never looked back and simply went from strength to strength.

A number of the goals were top class too! The most memorable ones were arguably a great Lacy free kick and a brilliant passing move involving Lacy, Liberty and Latia.

This is the first season that I have managed the girls’ team but it’s already turning out to be one that will last long in the memory for all involved.

Well done girls!

Under 10s Fire on all Cylinders against Marston Green u11s

Tuesday 29th August 2017 @ Gorse Farm Park

Marston Green u11s 1 – 6 Erdington and Saltley

fdc45f98a7dcc1f90fb9b0e67301c60c

Team: Padraig, Rhys, Navaro, Mason, Nahome, Louie, Harley, Neil, Olly, Che, Tavani and Cody

Goals: Neil x 4 and Louie x 2

Man of the Match: Neil

With half of the team being under 10s, the boys knew they’d have to be on form if they were to claim a victory against a quality Marston Green team with a penchant for attractive, passing football.

The first third was a scrappy affair from our point of view, with Marston Green looking more composed and playing better football. However this was to be expected as the Ton team were relative strangers and needed time to click as a team. Despite our far from perfect start to the game, we found ourselves in the lead after the first third when Louie’s long range shot took a fortunate deflection on its way to goal.

As the second third rolled on, the quality of our play improved, thanks in some part to our change of formation, with Mason slotting into the centre of defence, flanked by Nahome on the left and Rhys on the right. With only one defender in the team it was no surprise we conceded a goal, although thankfully by that stage we had doubled our lead. Like the Ton goal before it, the Marston Green goal had an element of fortune about it, although it was the least that the boys in green deserved.

The middle third of the game was pleasing due to the increased energy shown by the Ton boys and willingness to press Marston Green higher up the pitch, thus preventing them from building any periods of sustained pressure. This continued during the final third of the game and proved incredibly successful with Neil bagging four goals to push the game out of the grasp of Marston Green. His stunning performance rightly earned him the Man of the Match accolade and made it six goals in two games for the under 10s sharp shooter.

A special mention to all of the boys who stepped into defence and helped keep shots on Padriag’s goal to a minimum despite not being defenders. The likes of Nav, Nahome, Cody and Mason did a sterling job in defence, only matched by the energy and maturity of the under 10s who has a greta game.

Overall it was a performance packed full of positives and one that has given us much food for thought ahead of the new season in September. Thank you to Nick and the boys for inviting us over, allowing Olly to captain us against his own team and for playing some great football!

Well done boys!

Brig House Residential

Monday 14th August – Wednesday 16th August 2017 @ The Brig House

2017/18 Season Residential

Thirteen boys, two nights and lots of excitement. What could possibly go wrong?

Well apart from a few burnt chicken nuggets, it was an amazing few days!

Day one was spent playing games and running around the grounds of the Brig House in an attempt to capitalise on the boys’ competitive spirit and also burn off some energy. While we certainly achieved the former, we most definitely failed in our attempt to achieve the latter! This was illustrated by the fact that the boys were still away after midnight and up before 7:00am on Tuesday!

Day two started with a variety of fun team building activities involving eggs, balloons, junk, toilet roll and some ingenious ideas! We then made the most of the glorious afternoon sun by going on a three hour walk in the local forest. Note to self, never let 10 year olds choose the route and lead the way!

While waiting for Tonn to cook up a storm in the kitchen, the lads were split into teams for a quiz. To say there were some interesting answers would be an understatement of mammoth proportions!

Both evenings were spent socialising with board games, music and Fifa on the agenda. A huge Fifa competition saw Lamar square up against Resharne in the final that the public had all wanted to see. Unfortunately for Lamar, fatigue seemed to get the better of him as Resharne lifted the title thanks to a 1-0 victory.

For our first ever summer residential it was a huge success and one that everyone enjoyed!

Oh and as all teachers who have been on a residential know, the late night and early morning of day one is always replaced by an early night and late morning on day two!

“The best game of my life and an amazing day!” That’s how one player described our day trip to Cardiff and Barry Island and they weren’t wrong! It was an amazing day enjoyed by all.

After a 7:30am start, we arrived in Cardiff shortly before 11am tired but excited.

Despite a long journey, the boys were on fire on the football field, finishing the day unbeaten and without conceding a single goal. Both teams played some excellent football and gave us lots to be excited about prior to the season kicking off at the end of September.

The under 10s grew in confidence as the games went on, finding fifth gear during their final match of the day when their high pressing and incredibly energetic play brought them great success against Afen Nedd. It was a joy to see them playing as a team and working their socks off as they chased down every balling, leaving their Swansea based rivals with little to work with during the game.

Over on the 3G pitch, the under 11s were equally as tight when it came to the art of defending, also conceding no goals throughout the day. In front of goal, Jaiy popped up with a quickfire goal after 20 seconds of the first game, while Olly bagged himself a brace and Mason his first goal for Erdington and Saltley. In fact the boys could have ended the day with more than four goals, if only they’d had a bit more luck in front of goal.

With the action out of the way, it was onto the main event – Barry Island!

Fun and frolics on the beach, splashing in the sea and high jinks at the fair for all! It was a truly brilliant day that further cemented the bonds and friendships developed during the residential trip to the Brig House a week before. This season we have purposely done more away from football with the boys in a bid to develop a strong team spirit amongst the squad and based on the evidence seen on the Barry Island bumper cars, its a decision that is beginning to pay dividends!

Well done boys! What a day!

GIRLS FIGHT BACK TO EARN GREAT WIN!

Monday 24th July 2017 @ Hollyfields Club, Erdington

Erdington and Saltley 7 – 3 South Birmingham

Team: Millie, Lacy, Savannah, Rihanna, Liberty, Amne, Kayla, Octavia and Tiana

Goals: Savannah x 2, Rihanna x 2, Tiana, Lacy and Octavia

Girl of the Macth: Savannah

A great fight back. More goals than you could shake a stick at. Exciting football. This game had the lot! It was brilliant! The girls were brilliant!

After falling two goals behind during the first 15 minutes, we shared some honest words related to our lack of effort and fight. Pleasingly the girls reacted in an incredibly positive way and improved in all areas of the pitch!

During the second quarter we camped ourselves in the South Birmingham half and peppered their goal with shot after shot. However luck was against us as each of the shots sailed agonisingly wide or bounced off the woodwork. As the minutes ticked by, the girls continued to attack and were rewarded in the final minute of the second quarter when Savannah popped up with a goal to cut the deficit in half.

The third quarter saw the girls step on the accelerator and turn a negative 2-1 scoreline into a 5-1 lead! Our attacking play was sensational and our work rate was even better! The girls showed immense character and determination to bounce back and take control of the game.

A further two goals came our way during the final quarter, with Tiana scoring a well deserved goal for her brilliant effort throughout the evening. Furthermore the goalkeeping heroics of Rihanna, resolute defending from Octavia, Kayla, Amne and Mille, skillful passing of Liberty and tireless energy of Lacy and Savannah meant we were able to relax as the game drew to a close.

Arguably the most pleasing thing about the game was the ability for all of the girls to play in a number of different positions, as well as their willingness to do so. Right from Kayla through to Amne – all of the girls were amazing!

We can’t wait for the next game!

Well done girls!

Both Teams Shine Against Harborne

Friday 21st July 2017 @ Hollyfields Club, Erdington

Erdington and Saltley (Black) 3 – 0 Harborne

Tyrese, Aidan, Daniel, Klechai, Toby, Resharne, Reece, Olly and Cian L

Goals: Aidan, Olly and Cian L

Erdington and Saltley (Gold) 3 – 1 Harborne

Padraig, James, Angelo, Emmanuel, Enoch, Neil, Harley, Mason, Louie, Jamie and Liam

Goals: Liam x 2 and Neil

Over the past few weeks we have put two teams out whenever we’ve had a game and invariably one team has come out on top. However this week both teams excelled, with both sets of players picking up a victory following pleasing performances.

First up was the Black team, who quickly stamped their authority on the game thanks to their energy and drive, as exemplified by Toby in the centre of the park.

The first goal came from an unlikely source, after centre back Aidan wondered up the pitch, expertly controlled a cross, before cooly smashing the ball into the roof of the net. It was a finish fitting of any striker! The second goal was also smashed into the roof of the net, after left-winger Olly cut into the box and unleashed an unstoppable shot past the Harborne keeper. With the boys in control of the game, it was left to Cian L to place the cherry on the cake with a close range finish to top off a fabulous team mover involving Toby and Olly.

The passing and teamwork of the team was unquestionably the most pleasing thing about the performance. Despite still being in their infancy as a team, the signs are promising as the boys are gelling really well as a team.

However it was left to Tyrese to steal the show. The Birches Green shot-stopper cam rushing out of his goal to cut out some danger and with the ball at his feet, he sprinted the length of the field before spreading the ball out wide to Reece. Not content with this piece of trickery, he continued his run into the box and demanded the ball back, only to fall agonisingly short of the subsequent cross. It was like nothing I’ve ever seen before in my life!

The second game of the evening saw the Gold team take on Harborne and just like the Black team, they took an early lead, this time courtesy of Liam. Shortly after his first goal, the Audley finisher almost got his second, only to see his effort bounce off the crossbar. With The Ton leading 2-0, thanks to another Liam goal, Harborne dragged themselves back into the game when their player rose at the back post to score a great header. The goals continued to flow and Neil popped up in centre midfield to score the goal of the game from a significant distance. His rocket of a shot looped high over the Harborne keeper and nestled into the back of the net to restore our two goal lead.

Overall this was the Gold team’s best performance of recent weeks. Every player worked hard for the team and gave it their all. We couldn’t have asked for more and couldn’t have been happier!

Well done lads!

Up The Ton!

Tyrese the hero as the Ton beat neighbours Sutton Coldfield

Sunday 16th July 2017 @ Sutton Coldfield Town FC, Coles Lane

Sutton Coldfield 0-2 Erdington and Saltley

Team: Tyrese, Daniel, Bobby, Angelo, Mason, Resharne, James,  Toby, Reece, Liam, Cian L and Neil

Goals: Reece and Resharne

Man of the Match: Tyrese

After the excitement of the ten goal thriller played out between the girls of Sutton and Erdington, it was over to the boys to take centre stage. Despite having less goals than the previous game, it certainly matched the 5-5 draw for entertainment and drama.

During an end to end encounter, both teams created chances and both teams battled with every ounce of energy in their bodies. Mike, Ton and I were all left proud of the effort shown by our respective teams and we genuinely can’t wait for the season to start.

The first goal came from the left boot of captain Resharne after he arrived late in the box and latched onto the ball, rifling it low and hard into the back of the net. The second goal came from Reece, after he angled his run into the box and scored from a narrow angle.

Yet this only tells half of the story, as Tyrese saved two penalties with the score line finely balanced at 1-0. The second of the saves came in the final minute of the game, before we charged down the other end to make it 2-0.

The most pleasing thing about the game was the heart and fight shown by the boys, especially during the final 15 minutes when Sutton were in the ascendency. Such spirit will be key to any success we hope to achieve this season.

Excited is an understatement !

Well done boys!
